Thatching Lawn Service

What is thatching?

Thatch is a naturally occurring part of a healthy lawn, thatch consists of leaves, stems and roots, some living, some dead. Thatch lies on top of the soil in a thick layer beneath the blades of grass. Some reasons for too much thatch include:

  • Overwatering
  • Improper mowing
  • Clay soil

Questions from the field:

Why does my lawn need to be thatched?

Thatching helps your lawn to breath by increasing air movement, removing excess grass clippings from the previous year and removing diseased grass clippings. This will result in a greener, healthier lawn. Grillo Landscape Solutions recommends thatching for all lawn and turf areas when the thatch starts to get thick, ½ to ¾ of an inch, if you are unsure, please call us for a free evaluation.

Benefits of thatching at an appropriate level include:

  • Mulching soil
  • Decreased water consumption, grass will need less water
  • Looser soil, more room for roots to grow
  • Grass insulation for temperature changes
  • Turf tolerance to foot traffic

Dangers of not thatching your lawn include:

  • Forms a thick layer that keeps out water, fertilizer, insect control and disease control treatments
  • Blocks sunlight from lower blades of grass
  • Holds in moisture in lower grass blades which can cause disease
  • Blocks soil so grass grows in thatch
